Unmet Needs

CVD and its associated complications are rapidly increasing due to poor lifestyles and lack of awareness of its consequences. Most new CVD cases are expected to affect especially people in low and middle income countries. CVD disease management needs to focus on early detection to prevent heart attacks and strokes.

There is a number of challenging unmet needs from the patients’ point of view. To mention a few:

  • Early detection of CVD signals. The earlier the diagnosis is made, the more effective the prevention of heart attacks and strokes. By doing so, patients can receive appropriate treatment to ensure a normal life and thereby minimise the risk of heart attacks and strokes
  • Ensure optimal compliance to use of medication by creating high disease awareness
  • Management of suboptimal lipid levels
  • Reduce co-morbidities associated with CVD

Providers are targeting the unmet clinical needs by focusing on R&D within rapid, early diagnosis:

  • About 50% of all CVD associated events are asymptomatic. As many as 5% of heart attack patients are incorrectly discharged from emergency departments since they have atypical symptoms and electrocardiograms. This clearly indicate the need for early biomarkers
  • Inflammatory processes play an important role in the development of atherosclerotic plaque. Therefore, inflammatory biomarkers such as CRP and MPO may be elevated before irreversible damage is seen
  • New drug effective classes within hypertension and stroke prevention, especially prevention of DVT and stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation
  • New drugs that have a significant therapeutic effect on congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, dyslipidaemia and pulmonary arterial hypertension
