Data and Samples
The HUNT CVD cohort includes over 20,000 self reported cases of various cardiovascular events including cerebral infarction, myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, heart failure and other cardiac events (see Table 1). All cases are stored with available annotations, clinical data, genetic data, and laboratory tests, making it one of the largest of its kind.
Data and samples
Based on the extensive questionnaire data already retrieved from the screening survey, along with basic clinical examination, HUNT is able to perform a detailed categorisation, e.g. according to the Framingham Risk Score
In addition, a local, validated myocardial infarction registry makes it possible to increase the phenotypic specifications significantly in order to meet the requests of various research protocols. From this registry relevant information from the patients’ cardiac disease histories, including PCA, congestive heart failure, medications, different arrhythmias and/or death may be retrieved. This information can be directly linked to the same person’s record from the HUNT study prior to the myocardial infarction.
To increase the quality of treatment, a local registry for acute cerebral infarction was established in 2004. This registry includes information about risk factors, diagnostic criteria, medication before and after the cerebral infarction, and it can also be linked to the HUNT studies.
In the planning of CVD related trials and investigations, data from HUNT is available for all donors collected from 1984 to 2008 (Table 3). This extensive resource of data can be used to test various early hypotheses in the initiation of trials.
The biomaterial samples collected in the HUNT surveys include blood, serum, plasma and urine. In addition, DNA has been extracted and normalised. In addition to biomaterial, more than 50 demographic variables have been collected, blood pressure has been measured and life-style parameters have been recorded (see Table 3). Currently HUNT 4 is being planned.
